Shea Butter is a natural plant extract with exceptional moisturizing properties which comes from the karite or shea tree. The Shea tree, formerly Butryospermum paradoxum, is now called Vitellaria paradoxa.  It produces its first fruit (which resemble large plums) when it is about 20 years old and reaches its full production when the tree is about 45 years old. It produces nuts for up to 200 years after reaching maturity. Many vernacular names are used for Vitellaria, which is a reflection of its extensive range of occurrence – nearly 5,000km from Senegal (west) to Uganda (east) across the African Continent. The nomenclature history and synonymy of the Shea tree followed a very tortuous evolution since the oldest specimen was first collected by Mungo Park on May 26, 1797 before eventually arriving at the name vitellaria with subspecies paradoxa and nilotica. It usually grows to an average height of about 15m with profuse branches and a thick waxy and deeply fissured bark that makes it fire resistant. The Shea tree grows naturally in the wild in the dry Savannah belt of West Africa from Senegal in the west to Sudan in the east, and onto the foothills of the Ethiopian highlands. It occurs in 19 countries across the African continent, namely Benin, Ghana, Chad, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Ethiopia, Guinea Bissau, Cote D’Ivoire, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Togo Uganda, Zaire and Guinea.

What is Shea Butter used for? And who uses it?

Shea Butter is used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and in Europe it is also used in the confectionary and chocolate industry as a cocoa butter substitute.

If you follow my blog, you know I love Shea Butter and truly believe in all the benefits of using 100% Shea Butter for my whole body.  It is the greatest product I have found to soften and heal my dry cracked heals.

Shea Butter is a product you might be surprise about when you first open it, it's solid.  Pure Shea Butter is very thick and solid, but just scrape out a bit and place it in the palm of your hand and it warms up with your body heat and becomes easy to spread onto your skin.

My skin drinks up Shea Butter and I find I don't have to reapply it every 1/2 hour like I have with lotions that say they have Shea Butter in them.  I'm sure there is Shea Butter in those lotions, but not enough to do any good in my opinion.  100% Shea Butter may seem more expensive than those lotions you can pick up at boxstores, but do the math.  A bottle of lotion with Shea Butter can run $3, for the watery ones, and up.   One 4oz jar can last me about 2 months and I use it every day.  The Organic Shea Butter Company has a 4oz jar for $11.99, a lot less than a couple of bottles of lotion.

What a wonderful selection!

I have been using each of these products for about a week now and I just love them. The scents are so enjoyable, they are soft and light.  I don't like scents that overpower everything, so I highly recommend these products. The Happy Skin Whipped Lotion is working great on my old dry skin, my skin just drinks it up.  
The lip balm goes on so smooth and I love the peppermint kick, the soap and shower gel are such a wonderful treat and the bath salts are soothing and relaxing.
